Toledo Auto -Rama begins Friday TOLEDO - This Friday, Saturday and Sunday are the three big days for the 17th Annual Rod and Custom Auto-Rama at the Toledo Sports Arena and Exhibit Hall. It's all new never-before here in Toledo with over a million dollars of hot rods, custom cars, antique cars, classic cars and sports cars in the over 150 exhibits. In addition to a personal appearance by James Brolin (television's Dr. Kiley from the popular "Marcus Welby, M.D." show), this year's Auto-Rama will feature Michael Cole's ("Mod Squad") Mod Rod. Cole took a 50-year-old automobile, added a few modern touches and came up with a very mod rod. The roadster was originally a 1923 Model T Ford, but a 1971 Corvet back window section and deck were molded into the body. The back window is removable just as in the Corvette. The nose piece was hand-formed of fiberglass and the side panels, which extend from the nose to the body, are hand-formed aluminum. The lower half of the 'front windshield was chopped three inches, as was the original radiator. Tailllghts are from a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda. Luggage space, fuse box, wiring, battery and gas tank are all concealed beneath the trunk lid. ' The car Is powered by a 327 cubic-inch Chevrolet engine. A 1964 Chevrolet rear end was installed along with an aluminum turbo-hydra-matic transmission. Pete Ogden built and set up the front end. The most striking feature of the "Mod Rod" is the paint job, which consists of bow-to-stern murals. This took two weeks to paint through the use of tape, razor blades, pen and pencils and a small paint gun. The "Mod Rod" is driven daily and adds a lot of credibility to the expression "street is neat." . Other cars on display will be the Cycletron, the Love Machine, the Ultra Rod and the exciting Lunar Rover Vehicle. Producer Warren Bookman says that all automotive entries, many created by local enthusiasts, are competing for cash awards, trophies and points in the International Championship Auto Shows. The world's wildest wheels, continuous-showing movies and much more are part of the whole popular scene, the oldest and largest continuous-running Hot Rod and Custom Car Show in northwestern Ohio. Doors open Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. grid Pro considers changes DALLAS (AP) - Tex Schramm, long an advocate of sudden death dramatics to decide tied National Football League games, believes the rule has a good chance of approval by owners at the spring meeting in Scottsdale, Ariz. "We've got a better chance than we had last year and it came fairly close to passing," said Schramm, the general manager of the Dallas Cowboys chairman of the NFL competition committee. Schramm said, "There is an attitude in the league that we have to have progress." It takes 20 affirmative votes
