As in the past, the purpose is two-fold. First, it gives opportunity to hear about the miracle of Christ's birth without the rush and commercialization of the Christmas season. Second, it provides opportunity to help people in need at this time. Members of the congregation are asked to bring to the service non-perishable food items that can be used by people in the community who need it. A recepticle for monetary gifts will be used to buy toys for youth at The Oaks, a home of The American Lutheran Church for orphaned American Indian children in Oklahoma.

The other half will be given to an individual in the community. The convention's voting delegates (nearly 1,000) and the officials, advisers and consultants (an equal number) returned Sunday afternoon to topics aimed at reconciling differences. President J.A.O. Preus said early in his 37-page document, "It is no secret that in our time we have certain doctrinal problems within our church. On the one hand, it can be pointed out that doctrinal controversy is a sign of a living and concerned church. It can also be said that no church is ever totally free of doctrinal controversy." Another issue, relationship to U.S.A.

In higher education actions, the convention resolved to continue operation of Saint John's College, Winfield, Kan.

The Synod's Board for Higher Education has recommended that the two-year college be consolidated with other schools operated by the church in nearby states and the property be sold by June 1972. Dr. Preus 's report also dealt in detail with the fellowship relationship with The American Lutheran Church, voted two years ago at the Synod's Denver convention. A movement to suspend or rescind this action has been underway. Although fellowship (permitting free interchange of pastors and acceptance of communicants at each others' altars) has been "well received in some areas of the church, there are many other areas where it has been almost totally unaccepted." Dr.

Preus said. loly Assumption plans festival MARBLEHEAD Parishioners of the Holy Assumption Orthodox Church of Marblehead are busily preparing for their annual Halupki Festival to be held Sunday, August 1, on its own premises. The day will be gin with service of Divine Liturgy 10 a.m., the responses will be sung by the choir of St. Andrew's Orthodox Church of Maple Heights, O. under direction of John Romanchik.

After the service, a traditional ham and halupki dinner will be offered; carry-out, if desired, will also be available. Ladies of the parish will have a display of needlework Items, as well as novelty items, religious articles, souvenirs. The public is cordially invited. Sometimes in the realm of religion, and especially in the confines of the church, we get hung-up on numbers. If a religious meeting is held, one of the first questions asked is, "How many were there?" If the number seems to be above what might have been expected, we call the gathering a success.

By the same token, if the turn-out was poor, and only a hand ful of people showed up, we feel it must have been a failure. Our society often equates numbers with success. We grow up with the notion, "the more, the better." Out in religion, we really ought to question this common belief as the only measurement of success. Jesus gave a great promise when he said, "Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them." We ought to remember this and take it to heart. The key to such a gathering is, that it is "in my name." Because of the promised presence of Christ, the two or three become three or four.

And this is enough for a blessing. Numbers have their place. Someone counted the crowd at the feeding of the five thousand; and in the early church a total of three thousand persons were baptized at one time. We are glad when large numbers of people show interest in the faith. Christianity, by nature, includes all men in its mission, and seeks to reach large numbers with the Gospel.

But numbers are not the chief gauge as to whether religion is successful or not. The question we ought to ask of a religious gathering is-'Was Christ there?" Whether there were three or three thousand, this makes all the diffefence. Prayer Help us to see what counts.
