8 News Herald, Tuesday. Feb. 6. 1979 Little Lakers learn basics most of them with their permission slips in their hands and we knew we had something going." The Saturday morning sessions are divided between boys and girls. "The girls are further along physically at this age, Indorf observed.

"They will be until about the eighth grade, then the boys catch up." Indorf said the sessions are designed to develop an interest in the sport. Varsity competition is still a long way off. "Of course we're looking for potential players and we need talent at all skill levels," he said. "We're not trying to see who's the best player but to let them have a good time, to learn the fundamentals and to get them to always do their best." Helping Indorf is coaches Jim and Mary Rinaldo, John Paul Dress, Dennis Bird and Chuck Ihnat. Some varsity players are also helping out including Dana Higley, Wally Vickers, Peter Lamrners, Russ Monak, Jim Oglesbee and Mike Furnas.

By NATALIE PARSONS LAKESIDE-MARBLEHEAD Fourth, fifth, and sixth graders at Danbury High School have spent Saturday mornings this winter learning the basics of basketball. "We want the children to have fun and to develop their interest in the game," high school coach Larry Indorf said. The first hour of the weekly two-hour sessions is devoted to individual skills shooting, passing, dribbling, and ball handling; the second hour to team competition. The students are grooming for a 10-minute game at the halftime of a varsity game either Feb. 15 or Feb.

Rrf instructs mini-Ijikcrs Coach Den didn't forget Wamby They "CLEVELAND (AP) The long list of honored guests at Monday night's Sports Media Association of Cleveland and Ohio banquet included a man known to nearly everyone simply as Wamby. Wamby is 84-year-old William Adolph Wambsganns, the only man in the history of major league baseball to pull off an unassisted triple play in World Series competition. The official shortening of his name came in 1914 when he became the second baseman for the Cleveland Naps, the forerunner of the Indians of the American League.

The man making up the scorecards for the Naps couldn't fit his name onto one line and shortened it to Wamby. That name stuck through 10 major league seasons getting regular use in newspaper stories and boxscores and is even used now in his suburban Lakewood telephone listing. He played in the tumultuous years of baseball marked by gambling scandals, the arrival of Babe married daughters live nearby and Bill Wamby Jr. lives in Farmington Hills, Mich. The elder Wamby has 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He still is visited often by baseball historians and gets mail, addressed to Wambsganns, from people across the country. In fact, upon returning from a recent trip, he found fan mail from Cranston, R.I.; Franklin, York, and Cicero, 111. Baseball historians also have beaten a path to the door of his Lakewood home many times in the 55 years he has lived there. "I recently got mixed up in this senior citizen business," said the spry Wamby. "It has opened up a new world for me." Monday night, seated among such sports celebrities as baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn, heavyweight boxing champion Larry Holmes and 1978 Cleveland Indians Man of the Year Andre Thornton, Wamby was presented with the club's Nostalgia Trophy.

It was in the fifth game of that season's World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers that Wamby made history, catching a line drive by Clarence Mitchell, stepping on second to double Pete Kildruff and tagging out Otto Miller who was running on the pitch. Earlier in that same game, teammate Elmer Smith swatted the first grand slam homer in World Series history to start Cleveland on the way to an 8-1 victory. "After the game, I had one newspaper interview," Wamby said. "A guy from Brooklyn interviewed me.

He asked how it feels. I said it was the chance of a lifetime. Later, Elmer Smith said we could have made a lot of money if we had capitalized on it."
