B6 Monday, June 1, 1992, The News Herald, Port Clinton, Ohio Bataan students deserve credit for program Briofs Step'n Out Church women host Riverview birthday OAK HARBOR Tinka Worthington, Ann Turner and Dot Uhle, women of Firelands Presbyterian Church, Port Clinton, were hostesses at the monthly birthday party held recently at Riverview Nursing Home. A Kincrincr trrmin nf vmincr mm SknA nrnmon onfortainpri rpsi- dents and their guests at the party. This Woodmore group in I was truly impressed by the unveiling ceremony last Thursday for the Bataan Memorial Wall located in front of Bataan Elementary School. Everyone involved is to be commended on a job well done. The monument is really beautiful and a fitting tribute to the members of Company 192nd Tank Battalion who participated in the Battle of Ba-taanBataan Death March.

My uncle, Charles R. Boe-shart, was a member of that company and now lives in Kentucky. His health isn't the best and he was unable to attend the ceremony but he and the other living members of the company will receive a tape of the ceremony. I know I wasn't the only one at the ceremony with tears in their eyes as we listened to Mike Empcke and Steven Gipe play taps. I think what made the ceremony and the whole idea of the memorial so special was that it was the chldren of Bataan School who worked to see that the monument was built.

And it was the kids who conducted the ceremony. A Catawba Island parish, Resurrection Lutheran Church, celebrated its 25th anniversary Sunday. Dr. Kurt Borows Jr. is pastor of the parish and officiated at the special ceremony along with the Rev.

Erwin Streng, first pastor at Resurrection, the Rev. Harry Holzap-fel, pastor at St. John's Lutheran Church in Port Clinton and the Rev. Janine Dress, a former member of Resurrection who is now pastor of St. John's Lutheran in Marblehead.

St. John's in Port Clinton sponsored and helped Resurrection become a church. Others at the ceremonies were known as The "Classy Cats." Their director was Barbara Mauntler. Celebrating May birthdays were: Clara Fellerath, May 5, 92 years; Alverta Felder, May 8, 87 years; Ruth Smith, May 11, 100 years; John Jensen, May 13, 100 years; Mildred Faulk, May 16, 86 years; Pearl Hetrick, May 17, 87 years; Mabel Wilkins, May 18, 87 years; Esther Eckerman, May 20, 80 years; Alice Ziegler, May 22, 87 years; Mary Molnar, May 23, 82 years; Walter Sadler, May 26, 84 years; Nelle Lemm, May 27, 83 years; Evelyn Jess, May 27, 78 years; Ida Bell Mackey, May 28, 80 years; and Dorothy Hatten, May 30, 72 years. Guests attending were: Vonda Genzmen, Jeanette St.

It would be impossible to count the millions of adults who have suffered a lifetime of shame because their religious leaders made them feel guilty about the normal act of self-discovery. Stand by your guns on this issue.

A lot of people need your advocacy. New York Mom From San Diego: I'm a Navy wife who knows only too well what it is to be separated for long periods of time from a loving husband. Your advice to "satisfy yourself" was perfect. How wonderful that you had the nerve to print it. Greenville, S.C.: I was shocked that you would promote self-abuse in your column.

I hid the newspaper from my kids. Any more dirty stuff like that and I am canceling our subscription. Seattle: BRAVO! You are sure to get a ton of mail from the Bible Belt denouncing your advice to the woman whose husband has not approached her sexually for two years. Ignore them, please. Millions of others will applaud your courage.

These days when there is so much sexually transmitted disease, especially AIDS, it's the ideal solution. I could not respect you more. ELECT GEORGE L. MYLANDER STATE REPRESENTATIVE 53rd District Pd. for by Mylander lor You in '92 Committee, Bill Steuk, 165 E.

Benadryl i i Saline Solution SiHtiNvtErM emu IH Ion' -ff Dear Ann Landers: Bless you for having the courage to suggest self-gratification to the 48-year-old woman whose husband hasn't touched her in two years. I am nearly 80 now and my youth flashed before my eyes when you said you didn't want to hear from any clergy saying it's a sin. When I was about 13, our preacher gave me a book to read. It said boys who masturbate would become bald, diseased and insane, lead a life of crime and end up in hell. When my sexual urges became overpowering, I did indeed indulge in what they called in those days "self-abuse" and suffered tremendous anxiety and wretched feelings of guilt.

Every morning I woke up wondering if I had gone insane during the night or developed some outward sign that would let the world know of my "unpardonable sin." That terrifying misinformation carried over to my adult life and it took a long time before I could be a loving husband. Now that I am older and wiser, I see what horrendous damage was done to the youth of our day by hypocritical clergy who surely must have experienced the same urges in THEIR younger days. Hooray to you for having the courage to say it in print and remove the burden of guilt suffered by millions of healthy, normal people, both young and old. Raleigh, N.C. Dear Raleigh: When I wrote that response I didn't think it was particularly heroic.

It just seemed to be a simple truth that needed to be said. Thousands of readers, however, saw it quite differently. Read on: Dear Ann: Thank you for that terrific response to "Zero Self-Esteem."
