Friday, February 28, 1997 A In about Oak Harbor SHARE program offers food for small commitment I had a very interesting experience on Saturday. I participated in the SHARE food co-op distribution. My family was a bit concerned when I left because I told them I would prepare dinner with food from this distribution and no one knew just what that would be. For my $14 and two hours of community service I received: 1 package of five marinated chicken thighs, 1 package Crab Classic (an imitation crab meat), 1 pound of bacon, 1 pound bun-size Mr. Turkey Franks, 2 Pizza Supreme Pickets, 1 bag tri-color rotini pasta, 1 pound carrots, 1 head of lettuce, 1 yellow onion, 5 pounds of potatoes, 1 head broc-coflower, 1 Ottawa Counll zvwV i North zv BM 1 tfcjl 734-31 A1 i eL Middle.

That's a lot of food! For dinner we had baked 9 1 "1 The Shirley Linda Hartigan Irene makes here its way to Kelleys Island. herbed chicken (I removed the skin and visible fat), Apple Betty a family favorite made with apples, three slices of bread, brown sugar and margarine and a nice salad. I thought about baking some potatoes but this was already the most cooking I had done all week. On Sunday we made a pasta r- i I hm salad using the rotini, some carrots and crab meat. My daughter loved it.

And I liked how quick it was to make. I made California Medley a cream soup on Tuesday. That used most of the remaining vegetables. I froze the bacon. The next time all three kids are home I will treat them to bacon and eggs.

We do not use bacon because of its high fat content but the kids all love it. They will be thrilled. Don't worry about recipes for using the food. Both the SHARE newsletter and a flyer from the Family Nutrition Program list recipes for your food. Many sounded intriguing.

All the food was good. I recommend this program to anyone who would like to stretch the food budget. Some tips: Bring a laundry basket. It is the perfect size for one package of food. Save your yellow receipt! You need it to collect your package.

I didn't save mine. But fortunately I had volunteered to help at the Oak Harbor site and the people at St. John's Church knew me. Next month I will have my slip. I promise.

There is more to this co-op than just food. SHARE is for Self Help And Resource Exchange. It encourages volunteer service to neighbor and community. Ottawa County had more than 700 hours of service recorded in February. About half of the time was spent assisting others and half in community service.

That is not the final tally. One community hadn't turned in their hours as of my deadline. You can register for March SHARE anywhere you see the Care-A-Van. It will be in Oak Harbor on Wednesday, March 5, in front of the public library from Recipes and budget information will also be available. Food distribution will be Saturday, March 22, at St.

John's Lutheran Church from 1-3 p.m. for the Oak Harbor area. If you would like more information contact Ann Chio, Care-A-Van coordinator, at 1-800-243-0865. Or ask anyone in my family. News Herald photosDARYN SLOVER Capt Chris Jensen, of Huron, exits the bridge of the Shirley Irene Thursday morning. The 160-foot autopassenger ferry, owned by Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Lines, began its 1997 season two weeks ahead of last year, battling 50-60 mph winds out of the southwest. "The winds just picked up," said Jensen, a veteran captain of six years. When Jensen first crossed the South Passage at 4:30 a.m., Lake Erie was so calm that he could not see the end of the boat because the fog was so thick. The Shirley Irene, named after the mother of owner Jim Palladino, was launched in April 1991.

The ferry was built in Bayou La Batre, Ala. by Ocean Group Inc. Other area ferries are scheduled to begin operation in March. Neuman Cruise Ferry Line will begin operation to Kelleys Island March 28. Miller Boat Line will start services to South Bass and Middle Bass islands starting March 27.

The Jet Express will begin operation to Put-in-Bay on April 25 and the Island Hopper will start running trips to Put-in-Bay and Kelleys Island in the early spring.
