The central states and West saw their weekend get off to a sunny start. The cold front was expected to start the day over the eastern Great Lakes, then move into Northeast and work its way through the Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast and Gulf Coast. Isolated thunderstorms later in the day could produce wind gusts up to 65 mph, hail larger than 1 inch in diameter, torrential downpours and dangerous lightning. Afternoon sea breezes were predicted to trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms across Florida. Rainfall was expected to be minimal.

Now Kecia says, she's aiming for $1,000 before she leaves July 6 to visit her mother in Anderson. "The great thing is I get to see the fireworks before I leave," she said. The Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce increased its annual fireworks display from a $12,500 show to a $26,000 display this year to celebrate Ohio's 200th State office Continued from Al Clay Township trustees said they've been trying to work with Buffington to get the place cleaned up. They have limited recourse, though, since the dump was there before zoning was put in place in 1959. Township trustee Donald Peif-fer said it's a difficult issue, because Buffington runs the place by himself, and it's tough for him to clean the place up alone.

The driver, Gary Keyes, and one of his passengers Lisbeth Keyes, were transported by Port Clinton EMS, but it was unclear this morning to which hospital. Two children in the car, 9-year-old Jordan and 12-year-old Tyler, were not injured in the 4:05 p.m. crash. The wreck was a result of a three-car pileup that occurred when John Edwards, 21, of 1356 NE Catawba Road stopped while southbound on Ohio 53 North to turn left onto State Road, according to Ottawa County Sheriff's Office reports.

A Chevrolet S-10 driven by Parma resident Christopher Be-leal hit Keyes' Suzuki Sidekick, which was sandwiched between Beleal and Edwards. The impact propelled Keyes' vehicle into the back of Edwards' Plymouth Acclaim, reports showed. No citations have been issued and the accident was still under investigation. Beckford said this year the chamber asked members to help collect public donations and many businesses have placed collection boxes decorated by island children in their businesses to help. "Our island community is very generous," Beckford said, "and we are lucky to have the support of our community and the talent and civic mindedness of young people like Kecia and Kendra Mathys." In fact, some of the EPA documents filed in the AG's complaint even state that in 2000 and 2001 Buffington sent receipts of scrap tires, batteries and metal that were removed.

"He has had some great progress. He's a one man company, you could say, when and if he runs into any difficulties physically, things come to a stop," said Sturniolo. Sailboat boat lessons offered all summer Continued from A I "It is a positive, fun, rewarding experience," said Doug Su-domir of Akron. Sudomir, 27, is the primary children's instructor at the Lakeside Sailing Club. "It's really nice when you can see them demonstrating a concept and master it. Kids enjoy sailing, which makes it easy to have fun." Yet sailing experts aren't quick to squelch interest for those falling beneath the age limit.

Children younger than age 10 can get a taste of a Lake Erie excursion through the Lakeside Kids' Sailing Adventure. The program is offered by the Lakeside Sailing Club in conjunction with the Society of Old Salts, commonly referred to as the S.O.S. Club. From 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday, children are taken for a half-hour ride on a Sun-fish boat.

"We had a good response last year. We booked up a week in advance, and had a stand-by for every person booked," said Sailing Club employee Ted Pezalla, 16, of Ann Arbor, Mich. The program also fills another void. "A lot of families don't have Sunfish. They can't get sailing experience, there's no way.

This is one free experience of Lakeside," said Lakeside resident Tony Apotsos. Apotsos, 60, is the head coordinator of the S.O.S. Club, which has raised $40,000 over 12 years to support the Lakeside sailing programs. To reserve a spot in either of the children's sailing programs at Lakeside, call 419-798-4461, ext. 266.
